WebEdit File Manager: Old or New?

We're just about to launch the WebEdit NX beta and we wanted to get your opinion on something. Do you prefer the new file manager, similar to Windows explorer, or do you prefer the old one? Take a look below and please leave a comment to tell us which you prefer, as well as your opinion and any comments.

I prefer the old one. The new one has buttons (e.g. home) similar to the browser and it could be confusing to get used to.

Why not both? Have a link at the top that says "Switch to File Manager Mode" or "Switch to Site Browsing Mode". Would be practically the same thing and we could add that back into SiteCenter also.

I prefer the old design hands down...no doubt about it. I actually really dislike the new design and think it looks very dated.

I like the new design better--more consistent with the myriad applications I use day to day.

The new design is much more logical.

Old one. Theres enough immation of windows around, do something unique and think for yourself. And if you can't, think of a better product to rip off ;)

Of the 2 choices, I prefer the new - but maybe that is because I am so used to looking at SiteCenter! What I would really prefer is something that was more user friendly - ie. you could select page NAME ("Choose a page to edit: Home Page, About Us, etc") rather than by file name, as end users of this type of system don't need or want to understand about site and file structures. They think "I want to edit the About Us page" so how can you make that easier for them?

Please keep to the old design. The user interface is much better, the use of colour makes things a lot easier to see and navigate. Also from a rebranding perspective there is a lot more room to add client logos, corporate colours etc. The new one seems fairly grey and bland by comparison.

Thew new one is more professional, no doubt, but for my customers, computer-illiterate people, the old one is much more intuitive.

Im use to the old design and like it... but the new design makes since.

I suggest keeping the changes simple so people can somehow go back to the old design if they wish.

When will the shopping cart script be available??

Definatly the new design, thinking of our users here, they need a slick, easy to understand interface.
The new design appears like any other windows file browser...

Can you make a toggle switch so a user can have the option of what they prefer? It's hard to please everyone. Giving options helps to please most. It's also hard to tell without actually using it. I like the new option, but my client may like the old since they are used to it. The people using WebEdit aren't too skilled at web coding, so what they "finally" learn is golden to them. Few people like change, because they have to "get used to" the new. Just thoughts from experience working for non-web people.

I think the old design is preferable. My customers really seem to grasp the use of that design quickly. Could you have a setting in the config file that would allow us to use our preference?

Wow, what a huge difference in responses. I guess what we suspected was true, that it really depends on your preference.

I think we'll opt for letting users switch between the two as well as an option for the Admin user to set the default that will show up when first loading.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Eddie,

I really like the old design better but I like the option to choose between the two.

I prefer the old. My view of your software is simple to use and for people that don't know how to user a computer that much. Keep it simple.. The new is good, however you need to understand the process more.

The old one, hands down. The end-user interface is so much more friendly. I do like the idea of the admin being able to toggle between the views though.

It would be nice to give the new design a header where it says the application name. I like the nice orange header on the old design so the client knows the name of the application.

Much prefer the old style. The new style could be mistaken for the computer's file browser which could be confusing for the average non-techie web edit administrator.

I was shocked when I installed the new version of sitecenter and found this new design. I don't think its at all intuitive, which is the main focus when dealing with my sort of customers. I spent about ten minutes trying tofigure it out, whcihc would end up being lots of support queries from customers ! I prefer the new look ! but the old, easy, obvious usability.

I like the new one better because you can view each page or image in the browser window to the right. It's quicker to find a page to work on or an image that you want to use. More modern and will go with the new Vista operating system. Out with the old and in with the new.

Old looks better - easier to understand - i would apply big fat save buttons in the edit window

Keep the old one please. The new design might suit an above average user, but most of our business clients would have issues with the complexity of the design. From a pure usability perspective the old is far better, and we usbility test a lot of applications!

Looks like its a toss up based on the comments. You could provide both interfaces and let user select which configuration they like.

Presuming the new one will show folder structures and open and close them, I think it will be easier to navigate to the file you wish to edit / view.

I think that the new one will keep everyone on their toes with learning new ways as well as the old ways for optional use.

Definitely the new one. It's very handy to be able to see your file list whilst editing.

Of course everyone likes the old one - it's what they're used to! But that's not a reason at to which is better. How many people are saying they prefer Windows XP over Windows Vista? In the long term, the newer is better - its just a matter of getting use to it.

I actually prefer the old design. Although I would prefer the choice of which design I use. Some of our clients have used the old design for so long I would hate for them to login and suddenly find changes. Changes mean training and I know some of my clients are so un-technical that training them would be a full time job. Maybe allow us, the developers to select which template to use in the config file or something.
