Sneak Peek: User Groups in Interspire Website Publisher 5.0 (Coming Soon)

Published January 12, 2009 by Mitchell Harper

Continuing on from my last blog post which showed a quick overview of features in the upcoming release of Interspire Website Publisher 5.0, today I thought I'd share a few screenshots of how user groups are created - mainly focusing on the extremely flexible permissions system with allow and deny permissions for anything and everything in the control panel.

Obvious the first step to create a new user group is to choose the option from the "User Accounts" menu:

Clicking the "Create a Group..." button from the main groups page...

...takes me to the "Create a Group" screen:

After I give the group a name, I can click the "Add Permission..." button to setup permissions for users in this group. Doing so brings up the following dialog box:

This is where the power lies in the new permissions system of version 5. I have full allow/deny permissions over everything, right down to the granular level of a specific item (such as a specific blog post or media release).

If I wanted to deny users in this group access to anything except being able to edit 2 particular blog posts, I would add the following two permissions:

First, deny access to everything

Then, allow edit access to just 2 specific blog posts which I've selected

Of course I can keep adding different permissions for this group for as long as I like. I've setup a few custom content types: blogs, press releases, photos, etc, and here are the permissions I've set for those items:

Red = Deny - users do not have permission
Green = Allow - users do have permission

You can see there's also a little edit icon next to each permission so you can make changes if required:

So that's a quick overview of groups in the upcoming release of Interspire Website Publisher 5.0 - as you can see they're not only powerful in terms of permissions but also very easy (and fun) to configure!

Hi Mitch,
I can see a 'Categories' Tab under 'Add a New Group Permission'. Is this where you can allocate allowed Categories to a Content Type in order to allow User A the ability to manage, say, 'Sports' news and User B 'Business' news, where 'news' is the content type?
Or do you need to replicate your content types to have 'News - Sports' and 'News - Business' in order to allocate permissions to each?

Hi John. That's exactly right - you can limit users in a particular group to only be able to add and/or edit and/or delete and/or approve content types (whatever you create such as blogs and/or press releases and/or articles and/or podcasts) in one/more/all categories using the new permissions system - it's one of the best features in version 5 IMHO.
