This would be ideal (if not already employed) if it also had the ability to get the product SKU code so the when sent to dropshipper, they would know exactly which product was ordered.

To be honest, I was very disappointed with the Menu system.

I would have thought that given it was a shopping cart and potentially a large menu range, that the developers would have employed a collapsable menu system by default?

The problem with this suggested menu script is what happens if the user has Java turned off?…

As an SEO company as well as Interspire partner, I’d love to see improvements to the sitemap xml creation (include ability to set priority and change frequency) instead of just the page URL.

Also… it’s funny you mention $500,000 and two years to wait for some of the more high priced packages out there. As someone who used to implement those systems before launching my own company as a partner with Interspire, I’ve never seen one done for even double that amount. You’ve greatly underestimated the cost of those high priced competitors.

When I started reading this article I thought you were going to talk about some clever little SEO tweaks to help put make our sites a bit more optimized for the search engines.

What I read was an insightful and well thought-out plan on how to make your shopping cart of much greater value to our clients. As a web designer who is focused on the business value of my clients websites this means a lot.

I'd like to see more "zones" for banners. Currently there is only top and bottom, but I think there should be atleast "Left Top, Left Bottom, Center Top, Center Bottom, Right Top, Right Bottom" so you can put banners on the sides too.

I am about to buy Interspire in the next days. But I will start translating it into Bulgarian. To this effect, should I buy it now and start translating everything from English to Bulgarian or should I wait until the new version is available (I think you mentioned December 15th in a previous post) for all new clients so that the new files will not overwrite the translated ones?

One product had 2000+ possible variations which is a total joke! the vedit hack on the forums helped a lot.

We sure have. You can filter the list of variations, there's paging and you can bulk update based on the filters too – all massive improvements.

With three different variations, there are over 2000 lines of code generated which makes the pages HUGE.

I created contact list, form with field 'first name' – but nothing works. I saw video tutorial – what I do wrong?

Actually it was just a CSV file which can of course be read by Microsoft Excel.

This is great start to the “Survey” tool.

It would be great to have other configurable items like:

1. Page Background Colour
2. Have the survey boxed in the centre.
3. Have a different backgound colour for the box.

1 thing I wish would have been added to the dynamic block is a way to pull the dynamic content off of a webserver. For example, I would like to be able to create a linkedin style email (they send out a weekly email that is fully customized to each person that tells you what your friends are doing, whats new within your groups, etc)

I think if you could specify that the dynamic block gets pulled from a URL and can pass some customer specific parameters, then include whatever gets returned from the URL into the dynamic block. This would allow a developer to be able to fully personalize and customize the email going on. Otherwise there would be no way to include all this information as different dynamic blocks.

The way I see it, you have dynamic blocks, but those dynamic blocks are still static. I want to have dynamic dynamic blocks

When you exported the surveys, i noticed that you did it in Excel -format. Is it now possible to import contacts in Excel -format also?

Another feature request I have is manually moving a contact from one list to another!

Survey data is per user but no, the responses are kept separately from custom fields. You can of course do a full CSV export for each survey result however.

Is the information kept in the user data. That is if I run a survey for a particular list and export that list will the survey data be in it as well as the normal custom fields a list might have?

Let's say you are presenting one version of a headline targeted for people whose hobby is "basketball" and one version for people who match the hobby "tennis".

What happens if a user has selected both "basketball" and "tennis" as hobbies?

I'm looking into prototyping tools right now, so this is a useful one to add to the list to evaluate.

Designing in-house is one thing, but what customer research do you do with new designs (other than betas)? We've made some great strides in using remote desktop tools to do user evaluations.

We purchased ISC in May, with support till August. Before support expired, we purchased a one year extension to our support contract lasting till next August. Could you please tell us how long we will get support and free updates till.

For example, if your maintenance period expired on Jan 1st 2009 then 9 months of maintenance will be added, so the "new" expiry date would be October 1st 2009, so in this case your maintenance period would be current after being extended and you would have access to the latest release of Email Marketer.

On the other hand if your maintenance period expired July 1st 2008 for example, then 9 months of maintenance will be added, so the "new" expiry date would be April 1st 2009, so in this case you would need to pay for an additional 12 months of support.

So basically the answer is yes to both of your questions – yes, this applies to recently expired maintenance periods and yes, you will get the latest release free as part of this 9 month extension (as explained above).

’3D Secure is a new technical standard developed by Visa and MasterCard to further secure CNP transactions over the Internet.

MasterCard brand their system as ‘MasterCard SecureCode’ and Visa call theirs ‘Verified by Visa’. (Maestro cards will also be supported through the MasterCard service from the 31st July 2007).

3D Secure creates what is called a ‘trust chain’ throughout the transaction, shifting the liability for fraud from the merchant to the issuer under a range of conditions. Customers are requested to either enter their pre registered PIN code or to register for the service. If the customer chooses not to register for 3D secure the merchant will still be eligible for chargeback protection.

One of the benefits to the store owner of using the 3D secure scheme is the added protection of online payments. Any orders paid for with a Verified by Visa or Mastercard Securecode card will be eligible to Chargeback protection. This chargeback protection guarantees the merchant will receive the payment for the order.

As of the 1st July 2007, any ecommerce stores accepting Maestro cards on their stores will not be able to accept these cards unless 3D secure is in place.’

In Admin, is it not possible to have tabs for the Home page? The proposed layout doesn’t look very practical for day-to-day admin.

As you are highly unlikely to please everyone, tabs seem like a good compromise. However, tabs or no tabs, the first pane should show New Order from Your Store, and not Lets Get Started (assume most people are past that stage). Pending Orders next.

It would also help if you included download links to latest version (and an explanation why it’s greyed out if you haven’t got a valid support contract). Links to documentation to remind people they are available (should reduce your ticket queue, or not!).

Looks like a great upgrade.

When you say the upgrade will cost 50% of the retail price, why can we not buy the “extend my maintenance period for 12months” and get the upgrade that way?

I have two major questions:

1) Regarding upgrades from version 4 to version 5, will that be relatively seamless? All client content (pages, articles, configuration) will transfer over?

2) The #1 nagging "problem" my clients have with version 4, is that there is no easy way within the Link Manager, to create links to other internal web pages. The only way seems to be by manually pasting the URL, which is a challenge for some users (as they have to first locate the internal page by way of Site Map). Please tell me there will be a way to point-and-click for internal linking (as there were in previous versions of Website Publisher/WebEdit).

I have a number of clients using IWP is there any way to upgrade them using their current designs?

Questions:
1. Will it be possible to create custom forms, or will there only be the default contact form?
2. Will there be a GD image resampling feature? You know clients: they upload their multi MB pics straight from their cameras, and don’t have a clue about resizing first. It would be nice to let the script resample them (not just visually resizing) and delete the originals after uploading.
3. Can you post more info and a picture of the way the content items lists and category lists are set up in the admin? I mean what’s now the article and category list. The current positioning system with priority numbers is awkward. I hope it will be replaced by drag/drop.
4. Will categories (or content containers) actually hold their content items in the admin, in a tree menu? Or will it still be a long unsorted list with their container name as a column. That’s not very handy when you have hundreds of articles.

Menus are fully expandable using JavaScript and can be positioned anywhere on any page of the website.

3) Yes – comments are a module and you can drag and drop them onto your content type when creating it so they will be related.

5) Yes – version 5.0 has the most powerful permissions system out of any CMS available – open source or commercial. There is a full allow/deny and inherited permissions system.

What would make the menus that bit better (if it’s not already been implemented) is an option to make them expanding javascript menus, so they fly out when rolled over. Also, with menus created from content types, the ability to drag and drop menu items to change the order instead of having to sort on page ID or page title as in the example above would provide yet more flexibility.

Really looking forward to those custom content types.

Any hints as to the type of licenses that will be available? Are you carrying on with the single-user and 5-user licenses? Also, do you have an idea of costs yet? And, of course, any hint of a release date would be appreciated even if it’s very rough.

I've got a few big questions that I'm hoping you can answer for me about this upcoming product:

1) Can you create different "views" for custom content types? In other words, if I create a custom content type called an "Event", can I control how these are displayed in an "Event listing" module (summaries) and how they are displayed in a full page view of the event (including CSS styles and positioning for each field of the content)?

2) Can the form fields that are created for custom content types be filled in with HTML that is rendered upon display (instead of shown as just text)? Example: a custom "blog entry" content type has a "body" field. Can this field include <p> tags, <br> tags, <span> tags and even <img> and <embed> tags to show images or Flash content inline when a user views the piece of content (blog entry)?

3) Is there any way of setting relationships between pieces of content or content types? For example, if I want to create a custom "article" content type, and a "comment" content type, is there a way that new "comment" content instances can be associated / related with a specific "article" so that I can specify a view of the article that show related "comment" items?

4) This is probably possible if question 3 above is implemented, but is it possible to create a module that shows, for example, a thumbnail and description of a product in my store, but specifically a product that is related to the particular content item being displayed?

5) Will this include a user / security / permission system, so that different users can log in to my site and have access to different content and can have editing rights on certain pieces of content specified by me?

6) Any workflow system for drafting / submitting / approving content based on which content type it is?

7) Last question – what's your guesstimate of what percentage of the functionality of a CMS product like Plone, Drupal or Joomla the new Website Publisher will cover? 70, 80%?

For low and medium traffic sites, more radical changes will have a much more measurable effect. Try radically changing the page headline. Totally restructure the page (move the call to action from the bottom to the top). Change the customer service phone number from 10 point to 18 point bold. Redesign your form to go from 10 fields to 5. Add call to action assurances. Do two or three of these big changes at once. I’ve seen 100+% performance improvements.

Remember the smaller the gain, the longer it takes to reach statistical significance. Also don’t jump the gun – make sure your results do reach significance before drawing conclusions. It’s quite common to see wild fluctuations in performance in a test which can be misleading until the final conclusion is reached.

Very exciting to hear that IEM 5.5 will include split testing. You kept that quiet – or have I just been walking around with my eyes shut?! Fantastic news. Now we’ll be able to get those subject lines really earning their keep!

Does this version have order editing capabilities?

I know from experience with other products that sometimes a customers payment isnt posted back correctly from PayPal, WorldPay etc and I need to manually update their order, or perhaps edit it to grant them access to a different product. Since I deal with mostly downloadable products I need to be able to manually modify a customers order to grant them access to different products (eg, if they ordered the wrong product, or extend their limits on downloadable files etc).

With the current SC this has to be done by editing the database, any movement in this area?

Still waiting on subscriptions as well, is this on the drawing board?

A few features I have requested is a way for customers to add an email address to a product to be notified when it is back in stock (obviously this feature only displays when the stock level is very low or zero).

Interspire is #1 for shopping cart software, keep up the fantastic work you all do.

The other thing i am hoping for is the ability to have listening links for each product since we sell music. That could be a deal breaker for us. I would hope that i could import either links to mp3 files or the files themselves along with other product data fields when importing csv files for all the products.

Do you know which version in the future will have the ability to add multiple fixed pricing options for each product. We sell in the UK to Ireland and other European countries using delivery firms such as citilink, and sometimes the more expensive Royal Mail. Although I’m glad to see Royal Mail as a shipping option it would be nice to have the option for setting per product a fixed shipping cost to multiple locations like Ireland, France, UK etc. At the moment we can choose one fixed shipping cost when in reality it will cost a lot more to ship to Ireland and France than our UK shipping price, therefore showing the need to provide multiple fixed shipping options per product. Using the ship by weight option isn’t really feasible with over 600 products that vary in shipping cost greatly. Cheers Adam

Where will the uploaded file(s) be stored?
Does the customer have the ability to choose how many files will be uploaded?
Do the uploaded files go to a specific folder on the server named with the order number or do the go to a generic "uploads" folder?
What kind of notification will there be for files that are uploaded with an order?
Is it possible to add the uploader as its own web page so that additional files may be uploaded by a customer to the same order in the event that revisions or replacement files are required? Or, is there an upload function available within the customer account page for those who have placed orders for products that need to have files uploaded?

Again, thanks for adding this function to the cart. It will certainly make life for us, the print shops of the world, much easier.

As one of the beta testers, let me congratulate you and the Interspire team for some great improvements to the product. I'm really looking forward to the release.

However, there is one major issue that would prevent Email Marketer 5, from being used in a "true" CRM fashion, even a lite one.

Most CRM products, if not all, allow you to add contacts without email addresses, and add more than one contact with the same email address.

As Email Marketer 5, is foremost an email marketing program, it requires a unique email address for each contact added to the database.

I would like to know if you will be removing the cross-promotional panels in the new control panel?…or at least making a setting to remove this. It is quite off putting having Interspire's blog feed etc right on the admin home page because it kind of makes ISC feel like a third party service rather than a privately hosted web application.

1- A possibility to add logos to brands.
2- A possibility to add suppliers.
3- A multi-language system.

Also, the ability to store phone numbers, company names, etc. within the application’s users table (different from creating custom fields) so that info about the client can be stored right there with their user account. The user table has too little info about the user to be able to easily track and deactivate when needed the users corresponding to certain lists. It requires maintaining a separate spreadsheet to lookup who the name / email address is for client XYZ.

I setup a custom VPS server with a clean IP and cannot get emails to be accepted by Yahoo or Hotmail. Requires mods to implement DomainKeys, whitelisting, SPF records, etc. Some of it is easy to do, but other stuff is pretty tricky… like modifying the MTA to handle DomainKeys for Yahoo acceptance.

What other tricks are necessary? I bought your package and gave up on it for this reason.

Oh, and as far as other features:

How about a way for a recipient to self-trigger the next message in an autoresponder series so that people who are super-interested in a product, service, or topic can get all the info they want while they are still jazzed about it.

I like your template designs but when some things like buttons or headers or text are to big they kind of look low end. Your Interspire website design is very nice because it looks very professional and clean, nothing is too big with no obtrusive graphics.

I think the Reserved and Serenity are the most professional looking ones so far, I would like to see more like that clean style like your Interspire site. I do like the default template, it has that new windows style look to it, or whatever you want to call it.

All your designs are better then any of your competitors shopping carts included templates by far.

I can’t wait to get it on my hosting site to start selling it to customers, it really is the easiest cart for someone that doesn’t know much about design and programming, and for those who do!

For instance http//:link1 12 clicks view, http://link2 24 view, etc… So, it’s showing the link, how many times it’s been clicked and then a ‘view’ link, that when the admin clicks it, will show the people that actually viewed the link.

Making these lists exportable would be nice as well.

Also, to help handle bounced e-mails, it would be nice to be able to see an editable list of bounced email addresses. Many times people will type something wrong like ‘.cmo’ instead of ‘.com’ which are obvious and easy to fix. It would be nice to have a quick way of fixing these, and then ‘re-submitting’ them to the queue to get the e-mails they missed.

Resending a campaign. It would be great to have a quick link to Resend a campaign to the same lists that would only send to people who are new in the list since the last send. Or, to quickly resend the same campaign to a new list.

We’ve just started to use SendStudio this month and it’s a nice step forward for us.

It would be really useful for us to be able to:
1) automatically export email adresses of unsubscribed contacts to the supression list
2) view unsubscribed contacts sorted on Unsubscribe date(in Subscribes Menu-View Subscribers-View a list of Specific subscribers from within the selected lists below – you can now sort on Subscribed date but not on Unsubscribed date)
3) have the possibility to sort items on creation date in ‘Select a mailing list’ when sending an email campaign
4) use a 2 step Unsubscribe message(after clicking the unsubscribe link in the email blast, the contact should be directed to a page where he/she can confirm first that he/she wants to unsubscribe)
5) visualize the hystograms by hour for clicks/opens after more than 48 hours after the campaign is sent
6) unsubscribe/re-subscribe from/to various mail lists

Surveys would be great, and so would better troubleshooting with what emails/autoresponders did not get sent.

While choosing the specific group to whom a campaign should be sent to, the user is required to use a 2-step process:

a. Choosing the group
b. Specifying which email addresses (in the group) that a campaign should be sent to.

Step 2 is repetitive and unnecessary. I intend to send the email campaign to all the email addresses that I imported.

I feel that it is important to know how many email addresses bounce, but then these should also be switched “inactive”

For example ‘Send Studio has registered that 700 email addresses no longer exist. Do you want to delete these? Yes/No”
and ‘Send Studio registered that 400 emails have been refused delivery. Do you want to delete these email addresses? Yes/No

When sending an email preview, prefix the email subject line with [Preview] or something similar. I used to use a program that did this and found it very useful to determine which of the emails in my inbox were previews and which were real.

1. When displaying a mailing list, I know it’s probably not possible to display all custom fields, but as First Name and Last Name are very common, perhaps displaying at least those fields.

10 There needs to be statistics for the system administrator, showing what each account is doing. I’d like to see how many emails an account has sent in a given time period, last login, number and frequency of sends.

10 I’d like to be able to automatically send emails on recipient’s birthday or anniversary or such. As it is, I have to run birthday greetings myself once a month using the filter. I’d really really like to automate this.

5 The API doesn’t seem to have a way to programmatically add new accounts, so I can’t create a website that automates the task of new user sign up or cancelation.

1 Even though a blast has been sent, for some reason, the status often shows ‘Paused’ in Manage Email Campaigns. This often confuses the users, who are sure if the blast has been sent or not.

I’ve seen this already posted several times but I’d like to expand it a little:

The ability to either copy and move, manually and automatically, a subscriber from a list to another.

For example, someone subscribes to my 7 message autoresponder where I explain the benefits of a product I’m selling. When the subscriber receives message 4, he purchases my product. I would like the script to automatically stop sending messages from this list and move this subscriber from this list to another (so he doesn’t receive the remaining 3 messages trying to sell the product he already bought).

Instead, he is moved to a new autoresponder with a thank you message and maybe a complementary offer of more products. I guess this can be done by adding some code to my Thank You pages after purchasing a product.
