Hi Steve,

As we continue to improve and expand the software we will be doing more releases, both major and minor updates.

Maintenance releases generally happen every 1-2 months, but there is no strict schedule we adhere to.

I'm trying to plan these updates so I can skip those which are going to be followed closely by another patch (such as 4.0.6 did after 4.0.5 was released just last week).

I really need to look into a good file-comparison program!
4.0.5 was released as a purely security update to 4.0.4. Critical updates such as those will always be released ASAP, independant of any maintenance release we have scheduled. They generally don't require much effort to update the software, it's usually just a couple of files that need to be replaced (just check the changelog.txt).

can only wholeheartedly agree with Godfather, maintenance releases in such short succession are a pain. We just spend a full day implementing 4.0.5 in to test cart and started rolling it out today to life carts and now can start again.

Yeah, what Steve is describing is precisely what I am talking about. It would be different if incremental updates could somehow be automated (one-click updates anyone?). Something akin to, say, SMF Forums, where you could roll out updates every week as it takes but ten minutes.

Of course we want security updates quickly, but these 4.0.x updates have been bug smashers mostly, judging by the changelogs. Multiply the process times each client running ISC, and this is rapidly becoming a full-time job just to stay on top of things.

Not trying to be critical here; just sharing my concerns as a long-time Interspire customer. Each new version of ISC, IEM, and IWP seem to get bigger and bigger and bigger....and the bugs become increasingly obscure and meddlesome to patch.

That's a feature of 5.0 I believe...

Haven't upgraded since 4.0.3, so will do this one I reckon

You mean one-click incremental updates, Tony? In ISC 5? Or IWP 5?

This would be quite welcome if it is.

Can I just note what nobody really commented on..

  1. Thanks for the updated files list that makes a HUGE difference.
  2. Appreciate the heads up with all the information on the forums (and not just email) as again this pre-empts any questions about what's in it, etc..

As to the rest can I strongly recommend examdiff pro as a good diff() utility for tracking changes. I've been using it now for over 6 years to track my own code modifications and support various folks and it's a real time saver. It's trialware so you can kick the tyres for a bit and see if you can work with it.

Also, for the really technically minded I'd definitely recommend investing in a Subversion account or setup to store your modifications and manage multiple site updates. Again something I've been using for a while... It's a cast iron git to setup but even on Cpanel it's gotten easier... Probably not going to be for everyone but those with a serious training allocation I'd heartily recommend it as a long term time saver.

ISC 5

For merging I'm using Winmerge on the back of someone on here's recommendation - very good IMO

Automatic updating etc is on the to do list, and I've got quite a few good ideas for it - but what we have planned won't be able to deal with custom modifications to the core itself. The way SMF do things is by patching files - we don't agree with that approach.

We do have, as we already have in IWP and IEM, a fantastic event/plugin system that I hope we'll be able to bring to Shopping Cart which would allow you to add your own functionality to ISC or modify the default behavior simply by writing a custom plugin - and not touching any of the core itself.

Websnail -- I'd like to echo your comments regarding this new update. You're right to point out that we should not forget to express our appreciation for the Interspire crew with these updates.

Chris, Ray, and the rest of the staff: thanks.

Chris -- thanks for this insight, as I hadn't realized. The "event/plugin system" you are talking about, I assume that is in IWP 5 but not in IWP 4? Or maybe that's what the "Add-Ons" is (I never really poked around with that area yet).

I'd adore being able to modify behavior without having to touch the core. That would be a dream!
