How can I tell if my web host supports .htaccess files ?

This is really easy to do. Create a new directory on your web site using FTP then upload the attachement to this new directory. Rename the file to ".htaccess" (without the quotes). Also upload a test file like an image to this directory.

Now try going to the test image (or pdf or whatever you uploaded). If you get an error like "500 Internal Server Error" then your server is reading the .htaccess file and your host does support .htaccess files. If you see the image then your web host does NOT support .htaccess files and you will need to contact them to get them enabled.
