I get an error Internal Server Error when trying to view my website

This error is most commonly caused by something inside the .htaccess file. If a server has restrictions on what you can have in the file and it detects something it doesn't like, it'll throw a "500 error" or "Internal Server Error". The best way to troubleshoot this is to take sections out of the file to see what might be causing the error.

Open up the .htaccess file for editing. It is located in the base Interspire Website Publisher directory.

The first line is:

Options -MultiViews -Indexes +FollowSymlinks

Try changing it to just:

Options +FollowSymlinks

Save and upload the file. Then refresh your site. If you still have errors, edit the file again and remove the entire line. Refresh again. If your site still isn't working, try removing this block of code also:

<IfModule mod_security.c>
# Turn off mod_security filtering.
SecFilterEngine Off

# The below probably isn't needed, but better safe than sorry.
SecFilterScanPOST Off

Interspire Website Publisher can survive without the lines of code we've removed so long as the server doesn't have mod_security on and has FollowSymLinks already turned on by default (which is fairly common). So if that works, you can leave it and not worry.

If remove the code from above doesn't work, remove everything except for one line:

RewriteEngine On

If it still throws an error, remove the file completely. If there is no error any more, your server either doesn't support mod_rewrite or .htaccess files. Interspire Website Publisher requires the use of this. You'll need to contact your host about the issue or change hosts.

If you still find you have errors or are not sure about anything, send in a support ticket via your client area.
